Alumni Highlight – Theresa Tonozzi, MPH

Hometown: Glenwood Springs, Colorado

Graduated: 2013 Master of Public Health, Environmental, Agricultural and Occupational Health

Current position: I currently work for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) which is the federal agency devoted to conducting research and providing recommendations to prevent work-related injury and illness. I have been researching work-related injuries among minority populations in the U.S. I have greatly enhanced my skills in epidemiologic practices, encompassing the phases from data analysis to results dissemination. A memorable event occurring during my ASPPH/CDC Fellowship at NIOSH in Morgantown, WV was the announcement of the rule to lower miners’ exposure to dust in coal mines, in an effort to end black lung disease. It was inspiring to meet public figures such as the Secretary of Labor and individuals who suffer from the disease who are now public health advocates.

What you value most about your time in our program: I value the opportunity I had to study with people from around the world, from Burkina Faso to Thailand, as well as different parts of the US. Because of this, class discussions and projects encompassed diverse perspectives that have influenced my thinking of global current events and public health practice.

Advice for current students: Get involved in the community right from the start of your program. Whether it is through Service Learning and Legacy Projects or through other avenues, Omaha has many wonderful community organizations that seek to improve the health of underserved populations. Getting out and doing something positive for the community will enhance your learning experience and appreciation for health interventions as you complete your courses. And learn SAS!
