Faculty Honored for Notable Achievements

Education Highlight– Dr. Lorena Baccaglini and Elizabeth Lyden are the 2015 recipients of the UNMC College of Public Health Excellence in Teaching Award. This award, honoring governing faculty members whose outstanding teaching contributions facilitate the highest levels of student learning, was presented at the College of Public Health Annual Awards dinner held April 15, 2015.

Dr. Lorena Baccaglini is an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the UNMC College of Public Health (COPH). Dr. Baccaglini received her doctorate in epidemiology with a minor in biostatistics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  During her studies at Chapel Hill she was selected to join the Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health, an honor recognizing outstanding performance. Dr. Baccaglini completed a clinical research fellowship at the National Institute of Health (NIH) and regularly participates in NIH study sections. Her accomplishment since coming to the COPH include developing courses in epidemiologic research, genetic epidemiology, and NIH grant proposal development. Her courses integrate epidemiologic methods and hands-on SAS/statistical analyses. Students can choose to conduct one-on-one independent studies with her. While encouraging students to study topics that interest them she also urges students to be aware of hidden bias and unsupported myths.

Elizabeth Lyden, MS

Elizabeth (Liz) Lyden is an Instructor in the Department of Biostatistics at the UNMC College of Public Health (COPH).  She teaches Introduction to SAS Programming both online and on campus in the Fall and Spring semesters.  Liz serves on MPH Capstone committees and provides SPSS and SAS consultation to students analyzing data for their Capstone.  In addition to her work in the COPH, Liz provides consultation to students in the Medical Nutrition MS program,  in the Medical Sciences Interdepartmental Area (MSIA) program and undergraduates participating in the SURP program. Liz serves as a consultant, conducts data analysis, and assists with manuscript preparation for researchers on the UNMC campus including those in the departments of Infectious Disease, Orthopedic Surgery, Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine, Allied Health, Medical Nutrition Education, and Physical Therapy. To date Liz has 108 published or accepted manuscripts.
