Innovation means doing things differently:  Why mistakes are part of a leader’s job and how to manage them

This talk will center on two major topics.  The first will center on how leaders can manage and support the innovation process.  Case illustrations will be used and emerging research from the Leadership and Innovation Lab at Penn State lab will be shared.

Sam Hunter, PhD
Associate Professor of Industrial and Organizational Psychology
Pennsylvania State University

Dr. Hunter directs the Leadership and Innovation Lab and supervises more than 30 undergraduates and advises six PhD students.  He received his PhD in I/O Psychology from the University of Oklahoma in 2007.  Since joining Penn State, Dr. Hunter has published more than 60 articles, books, and book chapters across the areas of leadership and innovation management.  His work has been cited more than 1000 times and has been featured in a number of news outlets, including Fast Company, the Atlantic, MSN, Yahoo, USA Today, OZY.com, the Week Magazine, and the Pacific Standard Magazine.  Serving on the editorial board for several journals such as the Leadership Quarterly and the Journal of Business and Psychology, he will begin duties as Associate Editor for the Creativity Research Journal in the spring of 2015.  Dr. Hunter has received more than 1.5 million dollars in funding from agencies such as the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, and the UK Home Office.

In addition to his academic duties, Professor Hunter has also worked with with several organizations, including Lockheed Martin, Google, Johnson & Johnson, Oakley, Big Heart Pet, Epic Games, DDI, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).   Most importantly, Sam is the father of an amazing 4 year old daughter named Celia and husband to the much more talented PhD of the family, Melissa Hunter who is also a faculty member at Penn State and trained School Psychologist.  Sam is a huge fan of Detroit Tiger baseball and requires that every bio of him conclude with:  Go Tigers!
