Thomas E. Novotny, MD, MPH and John Elder, PhD, MPH

College of Public Health Grand Rounds:  “Global Health and Foreign Policy: Colliding or Cooperative Agendas in the 21st Century” presented by Thomas E. Novotny, MD, MPH.

Thomas E. Novotny, MD, MPH, is Professor and Associate Director for Border and Global Health, Graduate School of Public Health, San Diego State University. He is a graduate of the University of Nebraska Medical Center (MD 1973) and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (MPH Epidemiology 1992). He completed his Family Practice Residency with the University of California San Francisco in Santa Rosa, California, and the Preventive Medicine Residency with the CDC in Atlanta, Georgia. During a 23-year career in the US Public Health Service, he served as a Family Physician in Northern California, as a CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer in Denver, Colorado, as Medical Epidemiologist in the Office on Smoking and Health, and CDC Liaison to the World Bank in Washington, DC. He served in the Clinton and Bush Administrations as HHS Deputy Assistant Secretary for International and Refugee Health and Assistant Surgeon General from 1999-2002. After retiring from the USPHS, he was a Professor of Epidemiology at UC San Francisco from 2002-2008, where he directed international programs for medical and other health sciences students. He now co-directs a unique Joint PhD program in Global Health at SDSU/UCSD. His current research program includes global health diplomacy, tobacco control and non-communicable diseases, and pandemic response; he collaborates with researchers in China, Brazil, Ethiopia, Vietnam, Canada, Switzerland, and the UK . With Professor Ilona Kickbusch of the University of Geneva, he is the editor of “Twenty-First Century Health Diplomacy”, to be published in 2012 by World Scientific Publishers. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Dr. John Elder is Distinguished Professor of Public Health at San Diego State University’s (SDSU ’s) Graduate School of Public Health, where he directs the Institute for Behavioral and Community Health Studies (IBACH), the largest research center in the California State University system. He also serves as Professor in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). John has over 30 years of experience in health promotion research, much of which has focused on obesity control and chronic disease prevention in the Hispanic community. He has published over 325 articles, chapters and books on these and related topics. John has led 9 R01 grants from NIH and other federal agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-funded San Diego Prevention Research Center and the NIDDK-funded “Prevention of Obesity in Latino Pediatric Patients”. John’s Ph.D. is in Clinical Psychology from West Virginia University, and his M.P.H. is from Boston University. He is a 5th generation Nebraskan who grew up in rural Lancaster County and graduated from Crete High School in 1969 and UNL-Lincoln in 1974.
