Student Highlight – Janelle Jacobson grew up outside the tiny town of Badger, Iowa (population 610), in north central Iowa. After earning a Master of Public Health degree in Community and Behavioral Health at the University of Iowa in 2005, Janelle worked for three-and-a-half years as the partnership program coordinator for both Nebraska CARES and the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Information Service. During that time, Janelle provided technical assistance to organizations that were interested in cancer care, developing programming around cancer screening and early detection, clinical trials in cancer care, and program evaluation. Although the work was fulfilling, Janelle realized that there were gaps in public health provision and decided to return to the university to complete a doctorate degree. Janelle is currently pursuing her PhD in Health Services Research, Administration, and Policy, with a focus on public health systems and services research. The opportunity to work with the Nebraska Practice-Based Research Network to continue her research has been an extremely fulfilling part of her career development. After graduation, Janelle plans to pursue a career in academic research and teaching. Her goal is to continue working with public health practice-based research networks and to continue research in the area of evidence-based public health practice.
