RefWorks: downtime, new interface, UNMC alumni program

There is a lot of RefWorks news this week. Particularly exciting is the Alumni Program. For those not familiar with RefWorks, it is a web-based tool that allows you to keep track of bibliographic citations and automatically format bibliographies and internal citations in almost any style type.

Downtime morning of January 2
RefWorks will be unavailable on January 2, 2010 for server upgrades. The downtime will start at 3 a.m. and last approximately 6 hours.

After the downtime, direct export from the EBSCO databases may be affected. Please see the Workaround for EBSCO Export tips.

Coming soon: new RefWorks interface
RefWorks will be introducing a new interface in 2010. Initially the new interface will be optional. About 6 months after the introduction of the new interface, the old interface will be discontinued. You can preview the new interface at http://www.refworks-cos.com/RefWorks2.0/UI.html

Free lifelong access to RefWorks for former UNMC students, staff &  faculty
While affiliated with UNMC students, staff and faculty can obtain RefWorks accounts free through the Library’s RefWorks license. Now, this free RefWorks access will continue after affiliations with UNMC end. Former UNMC students, staff and faculty can now obtain free, lifelong access to RefWorks through RefWorks’ Alumni Program. Contact Cindy Schmidt (cmschmidt@unmc.edu) to obtain instructions for creating an “Alumni Program” account. Cindy can also help you replicate your current UNMC RefWorks account in an Alumni Program account.

We recommend that those alumni who are still affiliated with UNMC use RefWorks accounts created through UNMC’s RefWorks license. Records stored in UNMC RefWorks accounts contain “Check for UNMC full-text” buttons; records in Alumni Program accounts do not include these buttons.
