SAVE THE DATE: National Public Health Week 2014!

National Public Health Week 2014 is fast approaching! Please mark your calendars for April 7-11 for this year’s celebration of Public Health. This year’s theme – Public Health: Start Here – focuses on guiding communities through the evolving public health system. This is the fourth year the COPH Student Association will coordinate campus and community events in an effort to raise awareness about the critical role public health and prevention play in keeping communities healthy.

This year’s activities include:

  • Thursday, April 4: Outreach event with Project Extra Mile. COPH Students will meet with area high school students to promote public health as well as educate them on the health and social consequences of binge drinking, drunken driving, and motor vehicle crashes.
  • Monday, April 7, 11 am: We’re bringing you a Healthy Cooking Demonstration with help from Cooking Matters. At our kick-off event come taste some delicious and healthy food while learning about basic nutrition and food safety. The session is cosponsored by the Student Association and the PHAN Student Section.
  • Wednesday, April 9, 5:30-7:30, MCPH 3013: “Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare,” a documentary that examines the American healthcare system and proposes ways to transition from a health system that focuses on treatment of the sick to one that is committed to proactively keeping people and communities healthy. A panel with public health and clinical professionals discussing the movie will follow the screening. This session is co-sponsored by the Student Association and COPH’s chapter of Delta Omega.
  • Friday, April 11, 12-1, MCPH 3013: Join us for a NPHW Presentation with Dr. Joseph Acierno, Nebraska Chief Medical Officer and Director, Division of Public Health, Nebraska DHHS. Dr. Acierno will be discussing the current priorities and directions of the Division of Public Health and examining how the COPH and the Division of Public Health can collaborate.

Friday is also Public Health spirit day! On Friday, April 11, we ask that all who have them wear their COPH red long-sleeved shirts to show your support for public health. In case you missed out on buying a COPH Public Health long sleeved shirt during last year’s National Public Health Week festivities, you’re in luck! We still have some shirts available for $10 each. Please contact me for more information.

More information will follow about these and any other NPHW events. The Student Association hopes to see you in April! If you have questions or for more information, contact College of Public Health Student Association President, Caryn Vincent, at
