Presidential Management Fellows Program

Since 1977 the PMF Program has matched outstanding graduate students with exciting Federal opportunities.

This rigorous, two-year paid fellowship includes challenging assignments, developmental assignments, and networking opportunities. Finalists appointed as PMFs are hired by Federal Agencies to engage in solving domestic and/or international issues in a variety of fields, such as public policy, foreign policy, business administration, engineering, science, technology, public health, cybersecurity, and more.

The PMF Program seeks eligible graduate students every year who want to make a difference through public service. 

The selection process for the Presidential Management Fellows Program consists of the following:

  4. Agency Placement as a Fellow

If you are interested in federal employment, you should consider this program (many fellows go on to secure a permanent position). Recent years have seen a number of public health related positions, and we expect to see even more this year.

Tobacco Data Analyst

Utilize data in order to help lower the risk of tobacco-related illness and death for your fellow Nebraskans.

Location of position: Nebraska State Office Building Lincoln

Work schedule: 8am-5pm Monday-Friday

Examples of Work

Tobacco Free Nebraska is looking for a talented person to join our team. This person should be enthusiastic about all things data, surveillance, and evaluation in addition to wanting to help Nebraskans live better lives by reducing tobacco-related death and disease. A day in this position could include: Overseeing the design, implementation, and analysis of all tobacco-related surveys which may include contract management, generating sample sizes and designs, developing survey tools, and disseminating results. Conducting statistical analysis of tobacco related data including, but not limited to, hospital discharge data, vital statistics, smoking-attributable mortality, morbidity and economic costs; statistical analysis of health survey data such as Adult Tobacco Survey (ATS) data, Nebraska Youth Tobacco Survey (YTS), Nebraska Risk and Protective Factor Student Survey (NRPFSS), Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) data. Providing technical assistance to local grantees and communities regarding tobacco-related data and evaluation as well as preparing tobacco-related data fact sheets, reports and publications. Working collaboratively with both internal and external partners such as Student Health And Risk Prevention (SHARP) surveillance system team, BRFSS user workgroup, Statewide Epidemiological Outcomes Workgroup (SEOW), and the Evaluators’ Network. Creating and delivering presentations to partners both internal and external. Obtaining usable data; reviewing data; using data tools and surveys to ensure quality data is available to drive programmatic decisions. Developing and maintaining professional working relationships; overcoming business relationship hurdles as needed. Developing infographics, data reports, maps, and grant reports in a variety of formats to facilitate program outcomes for internal and external audiences. Presenting data effectively for a variety of audiences, including the use of data visualizations, common terms and summary findings. Writing reports on activities, surveillance and evaluation for grant reporting requirements. Occasional day travel and very infrequent overnight travel. Working closely with and providing data and evaluation support to an amazing team. Other duties as assigned. A few things to know:

  • You must be eligible for FWS, according to your 2020-21 FAFSA. If you are unsure of your eligibility, please contact UNMC Financial Aid.
  • If you are a current/returning UNMC student, you may begin working in a position any time.
  • If you are an incoming/Fall 2020 UNMC student, your first day of work cannot be before the first day of classes (August 24th).

Postdoctoral Fellow – Clinical Cancer Genomics

The Division of Clinical Cancer Genomics in the Department of Population Sciences (DPS) at the City of Hope National Medical Center invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow with interest in cancer genomics, cancer care delivery, eHealth, public health, patient literacy and education, and improving accessibility of care through health-related technology. The Postdoctoral Fellow will join a research team that investigates the role of cancer genomics and health disparities outcomes, as well as health-related technology in improving accessibility of information for patients, family members, and providers.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will work with Dr. Stacy Gray on NIH-funded projects with a focus on improving accessibility of cancer genomics information and integrating technology to improve health literacy. The Postdoctoral Fellow will participate in ongoing research, with a particular focus on cancer genomics, information technology innovations to improve care, dissemination and implementation science, data management and analysis, project coordination and management, and writing and preparation of manuscripts and grant applications. Considerable opportunities for mentored professional development including analytic skills for quantitative and qualitative data, writing lead-author papers, and designing, applying for, and conducting grant-funded research. 

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Design and conduct mixed method, observational studies, and intervention studies
  • Build and sustain partnerships with collaborators and external healthcare facilities
  • Collaborate on developing study strategies, methods, and designs
  • Develop research protocols
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative data analyses, and interpret study findings
  • Write manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications and research reports
  • Assist with grant development and writing proposals
  • Disseminate research findings through conference presentations
  • Assist in leading a multidisciplinary research team

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • PhD, DrPH, ScD, MD (including MDs who completed clinical training, or are in clinical training and aspire to be physician-scientists), or other doctoral degree in public health, health services research, behavioral science, epidemiology, psychology (e.g., health, social, clinical, or counseling), or a related field
  • Strong record of publications and excellent writing and statistical skills
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience in a hospital/healthcare setting
  • Exceptional communicator in both written and oral form; able to develop and deliver effective presentations for various audiences
  • An inquisitive mind to learn about and apply the latest research in cancer genomics, as well as educational online interfaces for improving patient literacy

Preferred education experience and skills:

  • Prior experience in health services or public health-related research incorporating cancer genomics
  • Analytical skills for large datasets
  • Experience with electronic medical records (e.g., EPIC)
  • Proficiency with SAS, R, STATA, or equivalent statistical package
