The Douglas County Health Department is seeking an Air Pollution Technician who, under the direction of the Health Director or designee, performs complex tasks involved in the monitoring and measuring of air quality, and in the maintaining of air quality monitoring equipment.
Monitor, calibrate and adjust complex air pollution detection equipment on a daily basis according to Health Department, state and federal agency, and manufacturer’s specifications. Interpret and understand complicated scientific measurements/ instructions.
Maintain and repair air monitoring equipment.
Sample ambient air for six (6) major pollutants, including: carbon monoxide, ozone, lead, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen and particulates. Record results in prescribed manner.
Investigate indoor air pollution complaints, and if necessary, test for pollutants such as ammonia, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, asbestos and other agents.
Report air pollution measurements to government agencies such as Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and Omaha Air Quality.
Compute Air Quality Index (AQI) by combining air pollution data with information from weather bureau. Release AQI to local news media, the National Weather Service, and other government agencies.
Develop and maintain databases regarding various aspects of air pollution. Review and revise forms that are used to record air pollution information.
Order supplies and equipment for air pollution detection equipment and report equipment malfunctions to supervisors.
Speak to community groups/organizations on air pollution and related subjects as directed.
Remain alert to changes in air pollution detection techniques/equipment.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, governmental officials, co-workers and supervisors.
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field required.
Four years directly related work experience.
Must acquire and maintain registration as an Environmental Health Specialist by the State of Nebraska (Statute 71-3703).
Must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of hire, and maintain it throughout the course of employment. Must possess own mode of transportation.
