CANCER CENTER UPDATE 8-29-14

Over the next four to six weeks, construction in front of the Durham Outpatient Center (DOC) will result in sidewalk and lane restrictions. In an effort to ease congestion during peak business hours, the majority of this work has been scheduled to occur over nights and weekends.Drivers and pedestrians are asked to exercise extreme caution and pay attention to posted signage as changes will be ongoing. Saturday, Sept. 6: Emile street, Lot 50 and Durham Outpatient Center (DOC) circle drive
Construction of a new skywalk that will connect parking Lot 50 to the second level of DOC will kick off with deep foundation work starting Saturday, Sept. 6.  This work requires closure of the south lane of Emile Street and the south sidewalk leading to the intersection of 45th and Emile streets.As a result, pedestrians traveling from Lot 50 to DOC will be required to use the temporary Emile Street pedestrian walkway, shifted just east of its current location. Those traveling from Lot 50 to the Durham Research Center towers will use the northwest stair tower of Lot 50, exiting west of the construction at 45th and Emile streets. Work in this area may extend into the first week of October.

Ongoing: 45th Street
Electrical work in the center lane of 45th Street continues.During this time, two-way traffic will be maintained, as will access to and from Green/Lot 2 Visitor Parking.Work is expected to continue into the first week of September.

Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center – UpDate

Pedestrian Access Through Emergency Department Not Permitted

Employee pedestrian access is no longer permitted through the Emergency Department. As a result, card reader controlled access sensors have been installed at the following locations and employees are asked to use these entry points to navigate campus. All employees will have badge access. Please mention these updates to your colleagues.

Now available

1       Ground level entrance on the north side of Clarkson Tower – Doors unlocked from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.

2       Passageway through Lot 3 temporary corridor into Durham Outpatient Center (DOC) to DOC main lobby – 24/7 entry

Pending card reader installation (delivery date TBD)

3       North side of the Medical Sciences Building (MSB), allowing access to the main corridor which connects University Tower to Clarkson Tower.

Construction of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center continues to progress with project-related utilities, site preparations and deep foundations. The following notifications will be posted as changes occur, and we ask that you mention these updates to your colleagues.

New Staff Passageway to Bypass Construction Site

In an effort to improve construction site safety and positively impact the project schedule and budget, the pedestrian walkway along 45th Street is now closed. Employees are asked to bypass the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center project site by following the passageway from the Durham Outpatient Center (DOC) to Munroe-Meyer Institute (MMI) as outlined below. Directional signage has been posted to help navigate. Provisions have been made to accommodate MMI patients formerly using Lot 2 with supplemental parking and valet service.

Pedestrian access along 45th Street is anticipated to remain closed through October.
