Lot 2 (Green Parking) Construction Updates

Additional Enhancements to Lot 2 (Green) Visitor/Patient Parking at the Durham Outpatient Center

Beginning Monday, June 29, the Lot 2 (Green) Visitor/Patient parking- adjacent to the Durham Outpatient Center (DOC) – will undergo lobby renovations as part of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and Emile Street Skywalk project. The phased construction within the lobbies includes all levels: A, B, 1, 2 and 3.  The adjacent stairwell has been reopened, and access to it and elevators will be maintained throughout the process, however, will have varying restrictions.  Directional signage will be posted to assist patients, visitors and staff with wayfinding, and updates will be provided throughout the work.  This renovation is anticipated to be complete in Fall 2015.

In addition to these lobby improvements, ongoing work is underway within the Lot 2 parking structure.  These upgrades include:  structural maintenance, surface coatings, painting, lighting and wayfinding.  This work is being phased and will span into 2016.

Construction work continues on the Emile Street Skywalk connecting the Durham Outpatient Center and Lot 50.  Crews are completing electrical and roofing preparations.  Glass installation will begin the week of June 29.  The skywalk is on track for completion by end of the year.

Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center Updates

Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center Progress Impacts Campus Streets and Parking

The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center is taking shape, and each phase brings adjustments to road and foot traffic.  The below grade pedestrian tunnel and utility work at Durham Research Plaza (formerly 45th Street) is now complete and ready to reopen.  Additional site utilities and building preparation along Dewey Avenue is set to begin this Spring, resulting in temporary street closure.  The following notifications will be posted as changes continue to occur.  Employees are asked to mention these updates to colleagues, and continue to observe all safety and directional signage around the site.

Road Reopens at Durham Research Plaza (formerly 45th Street)
Beginning Saturday 5/23, Durham Research Plaza (formerly 45th Street), including the west sidewalk, will reopen between Dewey Avenue and Emile Street. Access to Lot 2 (Patient/Visitor Green Parking) west of the Durham Outpatient Center will be maintained and construction traffic will continue. Pedestrians should exercise caution when crossing the street.

Temporary Road Closure of Dewey Avenue
Also, starting Tuesday 5/26, Dewey Avenue will be closed until Summer 2016. This will allow site utilities and other construction activities to progress. Those planning to park in Lot 31 (near the Munroe-Meyer Institute and J.P. Lord School) will need to utilize the reopened Durham Research Plaza (formerly 45th Street) to access parking.  Temporary road closure signage will be posted to assist with revised traffic flow, and to ensure the safety of drivers and pedestrians.

Enhancements to Lot 2 (Green) Visitor/Patient Parking at the DOC
Beginning the week of May 25, contractors will begin improvements and repairs to the Lot 2 (Green) Parking structure located adjacent to the Durham Outpatient Center (DOC). Improvements will include new traffic coatings, lighting, security upgrades, signage, and striping to improve both pedestrian and vehicular traffic flow. The enhancements are comprised of regularly scheduled maintenance, as well as upgrades related to the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center project.  Work is expected to be completed in the summer of 2016.

Lot 2 will also have phased restrictions to the east entry/exit lanes from the DOC circle drive, as work progresses on the Emile Street skywalk.  An entry and exit lane will be maintained throughout the work.  Beginning the week of May 18, the impacts will be clearly marked, and run intermittently through the summer. <photo of Lot2DOC>

CANCER CENTER UPDATE 8-29-14

Over the next four to six weeks, construction in front of the Durham Outpatient Center (DOC) will result in sidewalk and lane restrictions. In an effort to ease congestion during peak business hours, the majority of this work has been scheduled to occur over nights and weekends. Drivers and pedestrians are asked to exercise extreme caution and pay attention to posted signage as changes will be ongoing. (Click on photos to enlarge.)

Saturday, Sept. 6: Emile street, Lot 50 and Durham Outpatient Center (DOC) circle drive
Construction of a new skywalk that will connect parking Lot 50 to the second level of DOC will kick off with deep foundation work starting Saturday, Sept. 6.  This work requires closure of the south lane of Emile Street and the south sidewalk leading to the intersection of 45th and Emile streets. As a result, pedestrians traveling from Lot 50 to DOC will be required to use the temporary Emile Street pedestrian walkway, shifted just east of its current location. Those traveling from Lot 50 to the Durham Research Center towers will use the northwest stair tower of Lot 50, exiting west of the construction at 45th and Emile streets. Work in this area may extend into the first week of October.
