Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center Update: MUD on Campus

Metropolitan Utilities District (M.U.D.) Work – Emile Street and 45th Street Impacted

Beginning the week of June 23, M.U.D will start installation of new utilities to the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. Work will take place in front of the Durham Outpatient Center circle drive and likely involve vehicular lane restrictions along Emile Street.  During this time, pedestrians will be required to use the modified pedestrian walkway between Lot 50 and Durham Outpatient Center. Dependent upon water testing results, work may extend into the first week of July.

Once the circle drive work is complete (zone one), crews will move west and start work at the intersection of 45th and Emile Street and north along 45th Street (zone two). This work will take two weeks from the start date to complete. Lane restrictions are also expected at this location.

During construction, flagmen will be on site to direct traffic and we ask drivers and pedestrians to exercise extreme caution. Pay attention to posted signage as lane restrictions and traffic direction changes will be ongoing.

New Staff Passageway to Bypass Construction Site

In an effort to improve construction site safety and positively impact the project schedule and budget, the pedestrian walkway along 45th Street is now closed. Employees are asked to bypass the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center project site by following the passageway from the Durham Outpatient Center (DOC) to Munroe-Meyer Institute (MMI) as outlined below. Directional signage has been posted to help navigate. Provisions have been made to accommodate MMI patients formerly using Lot 2 with supplemental parking and valet service.

Pedestrian access along 45th Street is anticipated to remain closed through October.
