The McGoogan Library piloted a new service to facilitate study and scholarly research in the library. Four study carrels were selected on the seventh floor to be furnished with a locked two-drawer filing cabinet, lights, electrical outlet and chair. All UNMC students were invited to sign up for a drawing to win use of one of the four carrels through the end of the semester. There were 42 entries for the study carrels, with the four winners representing the College of Medicine. Students who won were asked to complete a short survey on the positives and negatives of having access to a lockable study carrel. Responses were positive with the students using the filing cabinets for storage of personal items. They recommended checking out the carrels for a month or less and to be on a first come, first served basis. The library will continue to explore the value of this new service in the months ahead.
Need to quickly charge your device and don’t have your charging cables? The library now provides quick charging stations, which are compatible with most phones and tablets. Cables include four sizes of Apple, 2 micro USB, and one mini USB. The charging stations are located on the 6th floor, near the Reference computers and the 7th floor near the study carrels. Locations may change, based on usage. Please note that the library is not responsible for lost or stolen devices or for technical malfunctions.
Visitors to the McGoogan Library will be greeted by reference librarians and staff at the new AskUs Desk. The Circulation Desk was recently renovated to serve all customers better by merging the services of the Reference and Circulation Departments into one service point. Circulation staff will be available during all library hours to assist students with reserve materials, checking out materials (including the collection of anatomical models), assistance with copying and printing, and answering general questions about the library. Reference librarians will staff the desk between 8am and 5pm, Monday through Friday answering questions about McGoogan’s biomedical databases and information resources. The combined desk will result in better customer service as well as staffing cost savings. The area on the sixth floor previously used for the Reference Desk will be repurposed.
Beginning October 1, 2013, scans of articles or book chapters in the library’s print collection will be free of charge to faculty and staff and no longer count towards the 50 free requests for students. These changes are being made in order to make the library’s print collection more accessible. Previously, the cost to have the library scan an article from the print collection was $3. For students, this service was included in their 50 free requests per year.
These requests are processed Monday through Friday and will be delivered to you on the same or next business day. This free service is available to the faculty, staff, and students of UNMC, The Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center, and Children’s Hospital.
Staff at The Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center, and Children’s Hospital will also no longer be charged for articles in the library’s electronic journal collection. However, delivery of articles may still vary, due to licensing terms.
