Awards and presentations at APTA Combined Sections Meeting

Emily (Bartels) Young, graduate of our physical therapy (PT) education program, received the Student Award for Geriatrics Research at the Combined Sections Meeting (CSM) of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) in San Diego on January 23, 2013. The award is from the Section on Geriatrics to facilitate interest in geriatric research among entry-level physical therapy students. It recognizes outstanding research-related activity completed by entry-level physical therapy students. Emily was one of two students selected for the award.

Dr. Dawn Venema (a Section on Geriatrics member) and Dr. Joseph Siu nominated Emily for this award. Emily served as a research assistant for their study about the relationship between cognition and dual-task ability in older adults. She began assisting on this study as a first year student with initial duties that included screening and scheduling subjects, and assisting with data collection and analysis. Emily continued to assist into her final year in our DPT program, taking part in the manuscript writing process. She ultimately co-authored, “Tasks Matter: A Cross-sectional Study of the Relationship of Cognition and Dual-Task Performance in Older Adults,” Venema DM, Bartels E, Siu KC. Emily is currently in her first year of clinical practice at Cozad Community Physical Therapy. She graduated last May.

Other CSM News
A third-year PT student, Shannon Roth, presented at CSM. Shannon’s presentation was on the collaborative project she and Dr. Joe Norman have been working on with Beth Beam, RN, MSN and Stephen Smith, BSc with the CON’s HEROES Project. This collaborative project is developing a “Just-in-Time” video resource library to train disaster shelter volunteers in performing personal assistance services for individuals in need of these services while housed in General Population Shelters.
